Divination…The Celtic Way!

By Kimberly Schneider | March 15, 2010

My first exposure to Divination was the study

of ancient Greece and Rome, and it wasn’t very

impressive.  Political leaders and corrupt priests

and oracles often twisted the signs or issued prophesies

according to their ego desires, not out of a desire

to commune with the Divine.

True Divination, however,  is the art of making

meaning out of whatever is happening around you.

It’s not about looking outside yourself for

“an answer” or direction, having someone or

something tell you what to do.  Instead, Divination

is an intersection between your Self and your Source,

an opportunity to step between the worlds for a reminder

of what, deep down, your soul already knows.

The ancient Celts engaged in Nature Divination.

If you lived in old Ireland and were troubled or

needed clarity, you might set out to climb a mountain.

The first animal you saw would have a message for you.

Of course, the deer or falcon or rabbit would not likely

speak your language.  In order to understand the message,

you would need to be fully present…to know yourself and

also know the natural world…the energetic qualities and

habits of the species you encountered.

We can still engage in nature divination today.  Doing

so invites us to slow down, to set our egos aside and

to be open to the ways of our companions on this planet.

Alchemists and Druids and ancient magicians did not

make magic by subverting nature…they became so attuned

to natural energies that they worked with them in powerful

and profound ways.  So Nature Divination might be your next

step toward making magic!

I had with nature divination, and a poem I wrote about it,
