Irish Wisdom for you: Find the Sacred in the Ordinary
It’s Day 2 of our Countdown to St. Patrick’s Day so here’s
another piece of wisdom from my Irish ancestors:
The Divine is Everywhere.
The Infinite isn’t just in some far away heaven…
it’s right here, in you and in me and in the space
between us. In the Celtic imagination, God lives
in the storm and in the breeze and in the ancient oak;
Goddess dwells in the lake and in the flower…
in mountain and in birdsong.
That’s why the Celts had prayers for everyday tasks like
lighting the fire and planting the fields. And blessings
weren’t just for special occasions (although they were
certainly used then too!) but also for eating, for beginning
a journey, for the start and the end of a day….
St. Patrick understood the Celtic way of seeing
the world…that’s why his prayer “St. Patrick’s
Breastplate” is still so famous. I say an adapted
version of it every morning: Christ before me,
Christ behind me, Christ under my feet…Christ
within me, Christ over me, let all around me be
Christ….Christ in every thought, word and deed…
Christ in every wave and every particle….Christ
in every heartbeat and breath. Christ be in the
space between me and everyone I encounter today.
Christ on the lips of those who speak of me, the
minds of those who think of me, the hearts of those
who feel about me. Christ in my blood and bone,
Christ in every cell and wave and particle and in
the space around me. Christ guide me, inspire
me, protect me and encourage me, Christ be with me,
today and always, in all ways.
In invite you to create a similar prayer for yourself
to remind you that the Divine is with you always,
in all ways…in fact, YOU are a spark of Divinity.
You are an expression of Essence. You are a manifestation
of the All that Is.
And that is pretty cool!
