My favorite thing about Michael Jackson

By Kimberly Schneider | July 1, 2009

If you grew up in the 80s like I did, then you remember big bangs, shoulder pads, 8 years of Ronald Reagan and, of course…Michael Jackson.

Michael was a musical marvel.  He put MTV on the map with “Thriller.” He had a sound, a way of moving and a particular presence that will never be duplicated.  I have to admit I don’t have any Michael Jackson music on my iPod, but if I did have one song, it would be “Man in the Mirror.”

I’m starting with the Man in the Mirror
I’m asking him to change his ways
And no message could have been any clearer:
If you want to make the world a better place
You’d better look at yourself and then

Make the change.

We create our world reality.  You, me, everyone on this planet.  We do it together.  It’s easy to look outside at “the world” and focus on what’s wrong, what needs to change.  But the real change begins inside.

When you see something “out there” that you want to be different, do you know how to focus that energy inside yourself, where it can be transmuted into an unstoppable force for good? When you learn how to do that, you can transform human consciousness.  That’s how Gandhi freed India.  That’s how Martin Luther King created a dream of racial equality that planted the seed for a new America.

It’s not just about how big or busy you are out in the world.  Plenty of people are doing important things.  And the real world transformers are working from the inside out.
Like my friend Don Smith, who started the program Empowerment Village.  Don visited Africa several years ago.  It changed him.  He saw some things that really moved him, and he became a different person.  He had a spiritual transformation that challenged him to empower and educate women and orphaned children all over the continent.

Empowerment Village’s mission statement says:

There are thousands of Villages around the world where people live on less than $1 per day. Our intention is to serve these villages by sharing the education, tools, resources, and funding to become sustainable.

Don’s organization is radically different from most of the groups who are working in Africa.  He focuses on empowering people for long-term sustainability. He doesn’t go through the governments or through organizations with a lot of overhead and red tape.  He works at the grass roots level with people who live in the villages.Go here and check it out: http://tinyurl.com/shareprosperity

Don believes that we’re all connected, and that when we empower people anywhere in the world, we make the planet better for everyone.  I agree.  I’m committed to helping Don transform the planet.  Would you consider a donation of $20 or more to the children and women Empowerment Village serves?  Dozens of villages in developing countries are now actively seeking Don’s assistance.  He wants to be able to empower them all.  I hope you’ll be inspired to help him.  Experience the satisfaction of knowing you made a huge difference today.  Change a family’s life forever.  Or think big, share more and change a whole village’s future.   When you contribute you’ll be part of the Empowerment Village community and you’ll receive updates on what great things have transpired because of your efforts.  You can make it happen in a few clicks at http://tinyurl.com/shareprosperity

And then, after you’ve donated, here’s a challenge for you:

Next time you notice something out in the world you want to change, consider:

How does this awareness invite me to change myself?

If you notice hunger, look for the places inside yourself that are crying out to be nourished.  Feed them, and watch what that inspires.

Where you see intolerance, seek awareness of the ways you demonize “the other” in your life…whether in terms of gender, religion, race, political leanings, sexual orientation, mode of dress or anything that makes someone different from you.  Offer compassion to those places inside yourself you’ve hidden away… because they didn’t fit in.  How does this begin to change your perception of tolerance in the world?

If you notice war, become aware of violence within your own psyche.  Where are you fighting others? Where are you fighting yourself? Ask the places inside you that are struggling for dominance to lay down their arms and declare a cease fire.  Find peace in your own heart and let it touch everyone you encounter, and everything you imagine.

Be the peace.

That’s how the change begins.
