Praying the 5 Directions
Do you ever pray the 5 Directions?
In ancient European cosmology there are 5 directions for prayer: east (air), south (fire), west (water), north (earth) and center (heart or spirit)
I’ve been praying with those five directions for decades.
Since returning from western Ireland last summer, the landscape of that place lives in my mind and I call upon it each morning as I pray, meditate and set my intentions for the day.
In the East, a rainbow over thatch cottages, and the clean air filling my lungs to remind me that the breath of my Source enlivens me…
In the South, the sun breaking out of the clouds and warming my face, connecting me to the fire in the center of the earth, the fire in my head, the fire in my belly, the illusion of form dissolving in the cosmic flame…
In the West, my eyes looking out from the cliffs on Dun Aengus at the wild Atlantic sea, the blood in my body connecting me with the circle of time…my eyes searching for what my heart knows: that the isle of Tir Na n’Og and my ancestors dance in the misty horizon…
In the North, the energy centers of my feet reaching deeply into the limestone of The Burren landscape, feeling the energy of God moving through the earth that is my body, dissolving the illusion of duality…
In the Center, Spirit flowing through me, dissolving the illusion of ego control, opening my heart, which is connected to The Heart of The World.
