The Geese Came Early…
I just returned from a lovely weekend away to the country with David, Maddie and Bridget. We were visiting our friends who live on a farm outside a small Missouri town.
When I asked David if he wanted to come with us to the farm he said, “what is there to do there?” ”Nothing,” I answered. ”Great! I’m coming then.” We were all hungry for some down time.
As we drove into the sunset on Friday afternoon we we were able to watch Canadian geese begin their migration north. It was an astonishing sight, as flock after flock crossed the highway above us on their return journey home. When I mentioned it to our friends they told us that the migration was early this year…typically the geese don’t come through until the 2nd week of March.
My Celtic ancestors believed that encounters with animals held meaning for us, if we are open to receive the messages.
I was especially taken with this encounter with the geese because a couple of weeks ago I created a “totem” of a Canadian goose for a family wall hanging we are making with artist Holly Hughes. The goose came to me in meditation and so I gave expression to her in fabric. The first time I made her she was lovely yet too small….her nest was cramped and she got lost in the scope of the scene we were making. So I remade her, bigger this time, with a lovely long neck and a nest ample enough to be a container for the energy I hold for my family and my business. It was a profound experience, so I couldn’t help feeling on Friday afternoon that the geese, crossing Missouri two weeks early, just as I happened to be on the highway, had a message for me.
Sunday morning I woke before sunrise and watched the sky begin to brighten. As I sat in front of the window I heard them…the geese….thousands of them flying over just before the tangelo sunball squirted its juicy citrus energy over the eastern horizon and into my heart.
I’m still sitting with the message of the geese, but they’ve already written one poem through me so I’ll share it with you this morning:
The Geese Came Early
The geese came early this year,
their exultant cries an exclamation point
to the message their expectant necks
and outstretched wings
were already writing across
the coral-washed sky:
Look. The ice is
melting. The ground that was so
cold and hard and unforgiving is softening now to receive us.
And so on this day through countless bodies
and innumerable voices
we declare
as one
our alignment with hope.
For no matter how bare
or bleak
or bitter the season past has been,
we WILL make our nests,
we WILL welcome new life,
we will answer the heart call
of spring.

Spring is coming, my friend! I pray that you’ll answer your heart’s call to welcome it.
