The Two Words that Will Transform Your Life
I often get questions about why some people are so successful in life and business while others flounder.
If I had to boil my answer down to 2 words they would be:
INSPIRED ACTION.
It’s important to remember that in order for these two words to work in your life, you need to apply them together.
Sometimes you might feel like you are all inspiration, no action. Time and time again you get the impulse to quit that job, approach that person, invest your time and/or money in an activity that speaks to you….and then…you don’t.
Or maybe your life seems more about action, without inspiration. You’ll recognize this happening in your life when your most common response to the question “how are you?” is “busy!”
Many people in modern culture are busy doing things that have nothing to do with creating meaning. Their activities are driven by other people’s priorities and urgencies and have no connection with the longing of their souls.
Inspired Action, on the other hand, creates magic and miracles. It’s movement according to your wise inner promptings. Often inspired action seems illogical, even totally crazy. Then again, that makes sense, doesn’t it? I mean, have you ever heard of a logical miracle?
One of my favorite demonstrations of inspired action is the old tale of Moses parting the red sea. I know, you’re thinking you know that story. But here’s the thing: you probably don’t know the whole story.
You remember that Moses and the Israelites were standing at the shore with Pharaohs soldiers rapidly approaching from the rear. There seemed to be no escape. Naturally, Moses turned to God and asked “what do I do now?”
This is where the story gets really interesting.
According to mystical Judaism, God’s response to Moses’ question was:
“Why are you asking ME?”
We might imagine Moses saying: “Uh, I dunno…maybe because YOU’RE God?*$#@!!!”
To which God said: “Moses, you already know what to do. I’ve given you all the tools. Just act, my friend.”
So Moses took a deep breath and said: “OK folks, here’s the deal. We need to walk into the water.”
The Israelites looked at him in disbelief. Walk into the water? Was he telling them to kill themselves? Wasn’t a return to slavery better than this madness?
But one person understood.
One person strode bravely into the water, with purpose and determination.
Moses raised his arm and held his staff high above the Israelites, so they could all see him.
Nothing happened.
Still, the one brave soul kept walking.
Moses continued to hold his staff up high, concentrating with all his might, pouring his very life essence into the knowledge that God had given him the power to create a miracle.
Nothing.
Now the man in the water was up to his neck.
Nothing.
Now the liquid swam around the trailblazer’s nose. He could feel the salty sea creeping into his mouth and nostrils.
Tens of thousands held their breath, hoping against hope, yet fearing that they would be called in moments to make the choice: slavery or death?
And then it happened.
With a mighty roar, the sea opened up, a magnificent, messy carpet of freedom stretching out before their incredulous eyes.
The Israelites were saved.
But if one “crazy” soul had not stepped out in spite of his fear, they would have remained slaves. They would have spent the rest of their lives cursing Moses for dragging them on this tumultuous tour of the desert.
So, have you ever had a “Moses moment?”
And if so, did you make the leap into the water?
Or, when you felt inspired to make a big change, did you revert back to the box you already knew was way too small for you, because you couldn’t figure out the road ahead before you stepped out?
Are you feeling enslaved at this moment to a life that no longer serves you? Are you feeling the call to walk into the sea?
My friend Beth Koritz, founder and owner of Green It Eco Solutions, took some inspired action in 2009 and her miraculous results speak for themselves.
When I met Beth in the fall of 2008, she had an idea for a business: Green It Home consultants. She wanted to help families easily make their homes more energy efficient and environmentally friendly.
Beth had gotten as far as designing her business card when she found out about my Alchemy of Business Intensive Coaching program and she enrolled right away. Eleven months after joining my Alchemy of Business program, Beth has expanded to four markets and she is getting ready to take her company national!
