Why I’m not getting the H1N1 Flu Shot, part two
I got a lot of feedback about part one of this series!
Emails, facebook posts and blog posts (one of my friends
even called me to talk about it).
Here’s the main point: Educate yourself. My decision not to opt for this vaccination for myself & my family may not be appropriate for you.
I have a lot of confidence in my ability to treat myself and my kids at home when we do get sick, and I have a lot of tools available that not everyone has (I’ll be sharing some
of them with you in this series). Mostly though, it’s about how you feel about getting the shot. It just didn’t feel right to me, so I’m not doing it. No, that’s not a scientific reason. Frankly, a lot of my life decisions are totally unscientific. That’s ok with me.
Here’s an interesting bit of science for you though: Did
you read the Wall Street Journal this week? There was an
article in Tuesday’s issue that reported a Canadian study
showing that people who received the seasonal flu shot on a regular basis (the regular flu shot, not the H1N1 variety) were 50% more likely to contract H1N1.
I found that fascinating.
I have a theory about that.
I wonder if, by injecting ourselves with so many vaccines, we are doing something detrimental to our immune systems. Is it the overwhelming number of virus strains introduced into the body at one time? (Kids often get 4 or 5 vaccines at once…some of them contain strains of several illnesses). Maybe that weakens the system somehow? Or is there something in the vaccines that is deleterious to our natural healing processes?
I do get some vaccines, and so do my kids.
But I have to tell you, that study was sobering.
It just makes me wonder….
Well, until we get it all figured out, I want to share
with you some of the things we do at home.
In addition to following Dr. Feldman’s suggestions
(see part one of this series, below), we keep a lot
of different natural remedies at home.
Let me say again: I’m not prescribing anything here.
I’m not qualified to give you any medical advice.
I am certainly not qualified to advise you not to get a shot. I’m just saying, do your research & make your own decision. And these remedies are things we use at home.
Rather than bombard you with all of them at once,
I’ll share a few at a time. You can get all of these remedies at Whole Foods & Walgreens and the Emergen C is also available at Trader Joe’s.
Oscillococcinum This is a homeopathic remedy that is widely used in Europe for the flu. Take at the first sign of the flu.
Elderberry syrup has apparently been clinically demonstrated to be quite effective against H1N1, in addition to other viruses. We are taking the daily dose through the fall and winter this year.
Emergen C powder. I like to boil water to mix with it and drink it hot, like tea. I drink it right away if I feel tired or have a scratchy throat.
Throw in lots of hugs, love, laughter & plenty of rest and you have a nice recipe for a healthy immune system.
All is well.
I’ll share more tips with you in later articles.
To your abundant health,
Kimberly V. Schneider
