This person is looking for a solution to a problem.
The problem might be acute or chronic, slightly irritating or profoundly life-changing. Regardless, asking for help, or even considering asking for help, exposes a vulnerability they may have difficulty facing.
What do we all want when we’re vulnerable?
We want to be seen and understood.
We want to have confidence that someone can consider, without flinching, whatever it is we need to bring to light.
We want to trust that we won’t be judged.
And we want to know that the person to whom we’re turning has absolute clarity on what s/he can (or can’t) do for us.
What does all of that mean for you, as a service provider?
It means that you want to be very, very clear about your purpose and values.
You want to be clear about how your purpose and values are expressed in your work, and what that means for your clients.
Think of it this way: YOU have to get clear about the unique and tangible benefits you can offer people, so that prospective clients can easily discern whether to work with you.
