Happy New Year!
There’s something powerfully symbolic about opening to January 1 on your new calendar (or seeing the new number on your electronic schedule).
It feels like it might be an opening, an invitation to step into fresh possibilities.
And indeed, it is.
And yet, within a few days or weeks, many people feel discouraged because they’ve fallen back into habitual patterns that leave them feeling stuck.
Does that mean we should never make resolutions, or hope for a different way of being in the world?
However, I do believe that New Year suggestions that you should strive to be a better you, a new you, are misplaced.
Because as long as you are striving to be someone else, somewhere else, you are disconnected from who you really are, right here, right now.
What we all need isn’t a new version of ourselves.
What we are really longing to reveal is the OLD version of who we are.
Not tomorrow’s version, or even yesterday’s version, or last year’s.
I’m talking about the ancient, primal and ever new you. The you that’s always been, even before the you you think of as you existed. The you that was, and is, and is to come.
If you can get quiet for just a moment, you might hear your soul whispering what you’ve known all along:
Everything You Need Is Right Here.
You don’t need to be someone else.
The YOU you are seeking is already here, hidden behind the masks you wear, the beliefs you’ve inherited, the patterns you’ve developed and the little addictions you feed in order to distract yourself from the anxiety you feel about being perpetually disconnected.
Your task, not just for this year, but for now and every moment, is to choose to pause and peek underneath all that stuff that’s covering up your Essential Self.
Might this be scary?
Might it call you do take some wild and crazy steps to change how you’ve been living?
But more likely, if you choose to pause and connect on a regular basis, it’s the small daily steps that will make a big difference. The small, daily steps can totally transform your life, revealing the glorious you that has been hiding for a long, long time.
The life you’ll be living this time next year begins with this moment, this year.
Breathe that in.
Sit with it, and see what arises.
Happy New Year to the Old You. It’s nice to see you.
